Biomechanics – Form or Function..what does it mean to the rider?

Form or Extrinsic Biomechanics, refers to how your body position and alignment looks on the outside. Your riding instructor may pick up on these, but might not understand why you find it hard to perform a certain move, which can lead to blocking of the horses movement. Sometimes these restrictions, difficulties and deviations from optimal position can be influenced by your function.

Function or Intrinsic Biomechanics, refers to how your body is working on the inside. Muscles, nerves and joints all work together to move your body and if they are not working efficiently it can lead to restriction in joint movement, muscle spasms or even pain all of which will affects your ability to alter your position and apply aids effectively.

We all have particular movement patterns and postural habits which influence how we ride. Whether it is from a previous accident, lifestyle, work habits, mucking out or riding multiple horses every day, over time it can have its effect on the efficiency of our bodies and how our horse moves underneath us.

The good news is Equipilates™ can help!

By using knowledge of Intrinsic Biomechanics and Pilates together you can improve your bodies own capacity for movement, improve stability and control, improve function and performance and help to re balance your body from inside to outside, left to right and front to back. You will develop awareness, flexibility, core stability, balance, reaction speed and positive relaxation, to make you into the rider your horse would choose!
